I have first heard of Manchester in my boyhood, when I
associated this name with Sir Alex Ferguson, being just a kid that loves
football, but time passed, I started being so curious especially about cities
and buildings. Surprise came when I received as a birthday present a guide of
Manchester and that was the moment that made me dream. I shuffled the pages and
I was amazed by the city atmosphere, and now, being able to find more expressive
words, I can say, it is the harmonious mixture between tradition, history and
modern beats of the city’s heart that made me try and get to this point of
being able to possibly get a place in MSA. Starting developing my passion,
architecture, on the way of improving myself I found a name that made the link between
me and Manchester even stronger. His name is Sir Norman Foster, and he became a
model for me by watching his works, especially his skills to design almost the
whole modern city of Astana. Hearing he studied in MSA was nothing but an
impulse to me. As a conclusion to cover the first question asked for the statement,
I do eagerly want to study in Manchester because I want to become a successful architect,
and for me, MSA is a proper place to develop. Being a hard worker, I do believe
that this city is the place where, if you work hard, luck finds you and takes you to a succes. So, wanting to
be in the right place and the right time as an future architect and a student,
I chose Manchester.
My most recent trip took me to the Astra Museum in Sibiu
where I was astonished by the buildings the country people used and still use
to live in some parts of Romania. I was lucky enough to have a sketchbook and a
pencil so I drew the two main pieces I was impressed by. The wooden church was
marvelous both as an architectural structure and as an ambient to live in.
Everything was made out of wood, starting with the clamps, the beams and finishing
with the roof. The wood was treated so it would resist in time, there was a
black varnish applied after the timber was previously oiled. I have also seen a
perfect mixture of wood, clay and stone in some classical Romanian country
houses.
Being in love with the modern architecture, a place I would like to experience in person would be the architectural masterpiece called Schroder House, designed by Rietveld. It looks for me as the perfect link between the interior and the exterior of a building. The facade is also brilliant.
